Depression Help Philadelphia, TMS therapy PhiladelphiaWhen it comes to depression, finding the right treatment for you takes trial and error. What works for some will not work for others. There are several depression treatment options, and you will most likely have to try a few before finding what works best.

Two common forms of depression treatment are anti-depression medication and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Both forms of treatment are excellent options for patients with depression. But it’s important to understand the nuances of each to make an informed decision in your medical treatment.

What are the success rates for TMS therapy and anti-depression medication?

  • Anti-Depression Medication - Approximately two out of three people who take medication for their depression experience symptom relief. However, there are many different pills on the market, so it may take a few tries to find the one that works best. Many patients will take two to three different pills before finding the right one.
  • TMS Therapy - This type of treatment is an excellent option for those unable to find relief from anti-depression medication. Studies show that two-thirds of patients who undergo TMS treatment will see good results.

What are the side effects of each treatment?

  • Anti-Depression Medication - Studies have shown that more than half of patients will experience side effects from anti-depression medication. Some will see their symptoms lessen after taking the pills for a few weeks, while others need to stop treatment because the symptoms are intolerable.
  • TMS Therapy - What makes TMS so beneficial is that it has little to no side effects. Some patients report headaches or slight discomfort, but thankfully these symptoms diminish with time. As you become acclimated to the treatment, symptoms will subside.
